Under its existing scheme of Establishment of National Centres for Specialised Training in Dance and Music the Sangeet Natak Akademi launched a special Project of Sattriya Dance Music and Theatre traditions of Assam in the year 2001 under which training programmes are being supported under different Gurus, Annual festival of Sattriya is being organized in Guwahati, Sattriya performances are sponsored at different places and support to traditional sattras are proposed to be extended.

During the Xth plan period as a result of the Akademi’s Sattriya Project the Sattriya Dance has re-emerged as one of the major styles of Indian dance and large number of artists have benefited. Besides, support for research and publication activities are being extended in the field of Sattriya.

The Sattriya Centre in Guwahati will be a logical development of Akademi’s Sattriya project and will coordinate and monitor all the ongoing activities of the project. It will serve as a focal center for training, production, performance, research, documentation and publication support to the entire field of Sattriya dance, Music and Theatre. The Centre would also undertake organizing Annual Festival of Sattriya Dance, sponsoring of Sattriya performances outside the state and maintaining over -all standard of training and performance in the field. The Government of Assam has agreed to provide suitable space for locating the Centre in Guwahati.
