Rabindra Nath Tagore Centenary Committee, headed by India's
first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru conceived and
created this large open air theatre in the early 1960s
during the centenary celebration of Rabindra Nath Tagore.
Situated on the Delhi Ridge, this theatre can be used
for music, drama and dance. While the auditorium can seat
as many as 8000 spectators, the 100 x 68 ft.stage can
be modified in three different dimensions proportionate
to the needs of the performance. Correspondingly, the
seating capacity of the auditorium can be reduced to 2000
by cordoning off the flanks. The make-up rooms, green-
rooms, costume rooms, rehearsal rooms and workshop for
performances flank the stage on both sides in the two-storeyed
construction and form a covered area of 577.5 sq. mts.
Sangeet Natak Akademi is entrusted with the management
of Rabindra Rangshala.
