In 1965, Akademi identified Shri Hari Dass Gupta, well known film maker of Kolkata to make films on Ustad Allauddin Khan and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. These films in black & white shot on 35mm are landmarks even now. As earlier there was no facility
for synch shooting in the Akademi, first in-house film "Ramayana in Kudiyattam and Kathakali" was compiled in 1973 by matching the sound track with the visuals manually and first film shot with a preplan to make a documentary on shadow theatre was "Chhayanatak" directed by Shri Jiwan Pani. This film was shot in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra at one stretch again with non-synch equipment. This film is considered as one of the oldest resource material on celluloid on shadow puppetry.
Shri Aribam Syam Sharma a well-known film director was identified to direct a film on dance drama with the artistes of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal.

This film "Sangai - Dancing Deer of Manipur" was shot at Kalinga Studios at Bhubaneswar and was very well received and has won several international awards.

Another film "Bhootaradhana" was assigned to Shri B V Karanth in 1988. Later on Shri K N Panikkar, Shri Jiwan Pani, Shri Bhaskar Chandaravarkar, Ms Sujata Miri, Ms Lakshmi Vishwanathan, Shri Sushmit Bose and Shri Manna Srinivasan were involved in
compiling films with material from SNA Archives. List of the films produced by the Akademi.

Recently, on the occasion of Golden Jubilee Valedictory Celebrations of the Akademi, a valuable film titled "Sangeet Natak Akademi reminisces ..." was compiled with the material available in the archives.

A film on Kathakali Master Shri Raman Kutty Nair was completed by Shri Adoor Gopalakrishnan has been and recommended for participation in Indian Panorama 2005, London and Bangkok Film Festivals. The film is also scheduled for preview in Delhi under Fortnightly Film screening programme.
