Akademi Golden Jubilee Music Festival

The Sangeet Natak Akademi is celebrating its Golden Jubilee which was flagged off by H.E. the President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam at the Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi on the 28th of January 2003. The nationwide celebrations are being held in various parts of the country which will feature a number of events in the fields of music, dance, theatre and puppetry.

Sangeet Natak Akademi, with a rich heritage spanning 50 years, has played a key-role in creating  and reinforcing awareness of various aspects of the perfoming arts, stimulating fresh thinking among practitioners through several major 'expositions' held across the country

As a part of its Golden Jubilee Celebrations, Sangeet Natak Akademi is presenting 'Sangeet Swarn', a music festival designed to highlight the rich traditions of Indian classical music, both Carnatic and Hindustani. Starting from October 29, 2003, this 5 days long festival will include luminaries of Indian classical music like Vidwan M. Balamurali Krishna, Padma Vibhushan, Fellow of the Sangeet Natak Akademi and currently Advisor to the Government of Andhra Pradesh; Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Padma Vibhushan, eminent Flautist and Akademi Awardee (1983); Smt. Malini rajurkar, the well-known vocalist from Hyderabad and Akademi Awardee (2001); Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Padma Shri and eminent Mohanveena player and Akademi Awardee (1988); Shri D.K. Datar, outstanding Hindustani Violinist and Akademi Awardee (1995); Ustad Shamim Ahmad Khan, eminent Sitarist and Akademi Awardee (1994) who will be featured in this festival alongwith a number of other accomplished artistes in both vocal and instrumental categories.

The Akademi has also taken this opportunity to present such lesser-known instruments as the Rudra Veena which will be played by Shri Asit Kumar Banerjee and an unusual Jugalbandi of Sitar and Shehnai by two player from Kolkata - Shri Kirit Khan and Shri Gauher Ali Khan. The festival will be opened by Tirupati Shri Satyanarayana and his group with a Nagawaram recital while another well-known vocalist from Andhra Pradesh, Smt. Sumitra Guha will be performing Hindustani vocal music. Shri Trichur V. Ramachandran, eminent Carnatic vocalist, Shri Vinayak Torvi, Hindustani vocalist and three musicians of the younger generation, Shri Kamal Sabri (Sarangi), Smt. Mala Chandrasekhar (Carnatic Flute) and Smt. Manjiri Asnare Kelkar (Hindustani Vocal) would also be featured in the course of this festival. There will be a Sunday morning session on the 2nd of November 2003 featuring Carnatic Veena by Shri B. Kannan and a senior vocalist from Dharwad Shri Panchakshari Swamy Mattigatti who will render morning ragas in this special session. Another important genre of Thumri and Ghazal will presented by Smt. Shanti Hiranand of Delhi.

Sangeet Swarn - Goden Jubilee Music Festival - will bring Indian classical music participating from across the country and acrosss generations. This major festival, the first in the series of professionals as well as the general audience.

The Sangeet Natak Akademi is happy that the Department of Culture, Government of Andhra Pradesh will be collaborating the holding this major event in the city of Hyderabad being held in the prestigious venue of Ravindra Bharati. We are deeply grateful of H.E. the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Surjit Singh Barnala for having accepted the invitation to inaugurate the festival on the 29th of October 2003 at 6.30 p.m. This event will also coincide with the Afro-Asian Games being held in the city of Hyderabad during this period and, hopefully, will be attended by the participants from other parts of the world.

We hope the Rasikas of Hyderabad and the audience from other guest countries will enjoy the Sangeet Swarn and participate in large numbers.
