Nritya Swarn  - Golden Jubilee Dance Festival

7 - 13 November, 2003 at Nehru Centre, Worli, Mumbai

The Sangeet Natak Akademi is celebrating its Golden Jubilee which was flagged off by H.E. the President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at the Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi on the 28th of January 2003. The nationwide celebrations are being held in various parts of the country which will feature a number of events in the fields of music, dance, theatre and puppetry.

As a part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, Sangeet Natak Akademi is presenting Nritya Swarn, a national festival of dance designed with a view to bring forth the rich tradition of Indian dance as interpreted by some of the most outstanding exponents of major dance styles such as Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Manipuri, Mohiniattam and Sattriya. Starting from 7 November 2003 this week-long festival will feature presentations by fourteen eminent artists — all awardees of Sangeet Natak Akademi — including Akademi Fellow Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam. While some of them are pre-eminent seniors who have been the leading lights of our dance world for three to four decades, some others are outstanding performers who rose to fame 1980s onwards.

Though the festival seeks to highlight the excellence achieved by the leading soloists, it also gives due representation to group works being presented by select leading institutions of dance. A notable inclusion is Sattriya dance — which is now regaining its due place among the major styles  of Indian dance — presented by Shri Ghanakanta Bora and his group. Of particular interest to critics and connoisseurs would be the multi-style production Ashta-nayika featuring some of the well-known as also younger dancers of Mumbai.

This is the first event in the Nritya Swarn series conceived by the Akademi for its Golden Jubilee and we do hope it will receive enthusiastic response from rasikas of Mumbai. We look forward to participation of dancers and dance students of Mumbai in greater number not only among audience in this festival but also as performers in events that would follow in other cities.

We are glad to have the association of the Nehru Centre, Mumbai in presenting Nritya Swarn — Golden Jubilee Dance Festival of the Akademi which is being inaugurated by Akademi Chairman, Dr Bhupen Hazarika.
